Black History Month at St Bridget's
What did we do?
Across the school we celebrated Black History Month by looking at influential historical figures from around the world. We looked at how they shaped the future both in this country and in other countries across the globe.
In reception class, we read the book ‘Handa’s Surprise’. We listened to the story and even had a chance to try some of the delicious fruit!
As part of Black history Month, year 1 looked at the life of the famous nurse, Mary Seacole. We compared what it was like to be a nurse in her time and today.
In Year 2, we looked at the life of Sarah Forbes Bonetta who was freed from slavery and raised as goddaughter by Queen Victoria! We wrote a biography of her life and thought of questions we would like to ask her.
In year 4, we studied the life of Sister Rosetta Tharpe. We created a leaflet to celebrate her life and music and looked at how she inspired people today.
Year 5 looked at the life of athlete Jesse Owens. We studied why it was so significant for Jesse Owens to take part in the 1936 Olympic Games. We created a biography documenting his achievements and explaining why he was such an inspiration.
Year 6 researched the life of Mary Seacole. We looked at the unfair treatment and prejudice she was subjected to and how she was able to achieve great things in the face of those obstacles.
