BAME Groups – Advice from Public Health

BAME groups have been found to be at higher risk of poor outcomes from COVID-19, children have been found to be at lower risk than adults. As a result of this the review into COVID-19 and BAME outcomes does not address the risk to young people from BAME backgrounds from COVID-19. Additionally a scan of the advice issued to schools around COVID-19 does not indicate that any guidance has been issued by the government in this area.

The Department of Education’s overview of scientific advice and information does state that:

The exact reasons for the increased risk associated with coronavirus (COVID-19) in BAME populations are not known, and there are a number of factors that could underlie this. Schools should be especially sensitive to the needs and worries of BAME members of staff, BAME parents and BAME pupils.
